 The sixth edition of the International Yoga Day will focus on yoga at home with family members. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the run-up to the yoga day, launched an event – ‘My Life My Yoga’ – in his ‘Mann ki Baat’. He encouraged people to stay active and fit during the coronavirus lockdown.

The theme for this year’s International Yoda Day on June 21, is “Yoga at Home and Yoga with Family.”

This ancient form of holistic healing was officially recognized by the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 11, 2014. The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized June 21 as World Yoga Day.

India’s resolution was adopted by 177 of the 193 UN member states without a vote. It had 175 co-authors, the highest percentage ever for such a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly.

History of International Yoga Day

The root of this historical statement goes back to the year 2001 when the Portuguese Yoga Federation and the Samkhya Yoga Institute took note of the proposal for “World Yoga Day”.

As a result, on June 21, 2002, the first World Yoga Day was celebrated. The first steps of this statement were made at a conference titled “Yoga: A Science for World Peace” in Bengaluru. 4th and 5th December 2011.

For the first time in history, this yoga guru from around the world has endorsed the idea of an International Yoga Day.

The International Yoga Day is also known as World Yoga Day. It was first celebrated on June 21, 2015. This initiative was taken by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who held a keynote speech on the theme of yoga on 27 September 2014 in the United Nations General Assembly.

That’s why on the 21st of September. In June, it was declared “International Yoga Day“. The proposal to celebrate International Yoga Day in the United States on June 21 was approved by 193 members on December 11, 2014.

Narendra Modi of the UN General Assembly said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition and embodies the unity of mind and body, thought and action, restraint and fulfilment.”

Sam Kutesa, President of the United Nations General Assembly, announced the celebration of the International Day of Yoga on June 21, and more than 170 countries supported the proposal of the Day of Yoga.

How did yoga originate in India?

Yoga has been introduced in India since pre-Vedic times. It has been part of the Indian way of life for years. Yoga is an important part of Indian culture and civilization, in which characteristics of the physical elements of humanity and spiritual upliftment can be found.

Why is June 21st chosen to celebrate International Day of Yoga?

June 21 is the day the Sadgurus are honoured. It is also the day of the summer solstice. During the June solstice, the North Pole is tilted towards the sun, or we can say that the sun is beginning to move from north to south. From the point of view of yoga, it is the transitional period, that is, a better time for meditation.

In the time of Sankranti or Uttarayan (around June 21), Adiyogi (the first yogi) went south and first saw the seven royal sages who became his first disciples. They have spread the science of yoga in many parts of the world.

It’s amazing that June 21 marks this important event in human history. This date in the Northern Hemisphere is also the longest day of the year and has a special meaning in many parts of the world.
