Tuberculosis was first discovered by Dr. Robert Koch in the year 1882 and amazingly announced by him to a small group of scientists at “The University of Berlin’s Institute of Hygiene” about the cause of tuberculosis means the TB bacillus.
Using a microscope, he presented many microscope slides to explain the etiology of tuberculosis, a virulent human infectious disease. According to his announcement in Berlin, it spread rapidly throughout Europe and the Americas, killing one out of seven people.
His discovery of tuberculosis opened a big door in front the people to get diagnosed and cured of tuberculosis.
HISTORY OF WorldTuberculosis Day
“The International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD)” had planned to establish World TB Day on 24th March in honor of Dr. Robert Koch’s 100th anniversary of his Tuberculosis presentation.
A joint effort of the IUATLD and WHO established this event under the theme “Defeat TB: Now and Forever”. However, the UN and the WHO did not declare it an official celebration.
By 1995, the WHO and the Royal Dutch Tuberculosis Foundation decided to celebrate it annually in Den Haag, the Netherlands. Organizations such as WHO, the IUATLD, and KNCV are planning a variety of events and activities to celebrate World Tuberculosis Day next year in 1996.
DOTS was declared the biggest step taken against tuberculosis by the WHO at a news conference in Berlin in 1997. A new network “Stop TB Partnership” has been launched by various organizations to fight against TB by highlighting the scope of prevention and cure of this disease to the common public. ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross) is helping people to fight against TB in prisons because of overcrowding and poor nutrition.

An annual event, World TB Day is celebrated to make people aware of the causes, preventions, and cures of tuberculosis, in order to prevent and eradicate this disease from the planet. All the people at a workplace or home should be encouraged about their health maintenance and must know about the prevention of tuberculosis.
Around 4000 people die every day from this airborne disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
The DOTS treatment administered by the government completely cures the disease at a very low cost. Its treatments and diagnostic tests should be accessible to every person affected by tuberculosis all over the world and the death rate from this disease should be zero.
World TB Day celebration provides a big opportunity for all people to get aware of the causes and precautions of TB. It mobilizes the political and social authorities for further progress toward disease prevention for the effective reduction of TB cases and death rates in the coming years.
