World Meteorological Day : Top 10 Quotes WMO

World Meteorological Day:- World Meteorological Day is used to celebrate on the 23rd of March 1961 every year.

National Meteorological and Hydrological Services work around the clock to monitor Earth System and provide vital weather and climate information worldwide.  Their warnings help save life and property, protect resources and the environment and support socio-economic growth. WMO supports National Meteorological and Hydrological Services with this work and in meeting their international commitments in the areas of disaster risk reduction, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and sustainable development.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is an intergovernmental organization with a membership of 193 Member States and Territories. The Convention serves as the constituent treaty of the WMO, setting forth its purposes, governance, and general framework. As weather, climate and the water cycle know no national boundaries, international cooperation at a global scale is essential for the development of meteorology and operational hydrology as well as to reap the benefits from their application. WMO provides the framework for such international cooperation.

The WMO hierarchy:

  • The World Meteorological Congress, the supreme body of the Organization, determines policy.  Congress elects the President and vice-presidents of the Organization and members of the Executive Council; and appoints the Secretary-General.
  • The Executive Council (EC) implements Congress decisions.

WMO facilitates and promotes:

  • the establishment of an integrated Earth System observation network to provide weather, climate, and water-related data
  • coordination of research and training in meteorology and related fields.

As of August 2020, the WMO has a membership of 193 member states and territories.[11]

4.The astronomer is, in some measure, independent of his fellow astronomer; he can wait in his observatory till the star he wishes to observe comes to his meridian; but the meteorologist has his observations bounded by a very limited horizon, and can do little without the aid of numerous observers furnishing him contemporaneous observations over a wide-extended area.

5.Perhaps someday in the dim future, it will be possible to advance the computations faster than the weather advances and at a cost, less than the saving to mankind due to the information gained. But that is a dream.

9.If the observation of the amount of heat the sun sends the earth is among the most important and difficult in astronomical physics, it may also be termed the fundamental problem of meteorology, nearly all whose phenomena would become predictable, if we knew both the original quantity and kind of this heat.

10.All stable processes we shall predict. All unstable processes we shall control.
